This Privacy Policy explains how Grey Root Labs ("we", "us", or "our") handles information when you use the Android application ASCII Widgets (the "App"), which we publish on Google Play under the developer name Grey Root Labs.
In short: ASCII Widgets works entirely on your phone. No account, no ads, no analytics, no tracking — and we never receive your data.
01 Who we are
The data controller responsible for the App is Grey Root Labs, an independent app developer based in Gujarat, India. You can reach us at codeninjaapps07@gmail.com for any question about this policy.
This policy covers the App identified above and no other product.
02 The short version
ASCII Widgets has no account, no ads, no analytics and no tracking. Every widget, banner, pet and portrait is drawn on your device. We do not run a server, and nothing about you is ever sent to us.
03 Information we do not collect
We do not collect or request:
- Your name, email address, phone number, or postal address
- Your contacts, messages, call logs, or calendar
- Camera or microphone access — the App does not request these permissions
- Your location — the App has no location permission and never reads it
- Your advertising ID
- The content of your notifications
We do not sell your personal data.
04 Information stored only on your device
The App saves some data in its private storage on your device so your widgets work the way you set them up. This data never leaves your device:
- Widget settings, colors, fonts, and the theme you choose
- Banner text and ASCII art you type or paste in the Studio
- Your Partners collection and the date of your last daily roll
- Pet feeding streaks
- Daily step totals, to move the Steps Walker
- Photos you pick for portrait widgets — a copy is kept inside the App so the widget can turn it into ASCII art; the conversion happens on your device
- The city you choose for the weatherfetch widget
Phone details shown by fetch.exe (Android version, battery, uptime, memory and storage) are read when the widget is drawn and are not stored or sent. We cannot read any of this data. It is deleted when you uninstall the App or clear its data.
05 Network requests
Only one feature uses the internet, and it sends no personal identifiers:
| Feature | What is sent, and to whom |
|---|---|
| weatherfetch widget | The map coordinates of the city you choose, or the name you search for, sent to Open-Meteo (open-meteo.com) to get a forecast. This is not your device's location. |
Like any internet service, Open-Meteo receives your IP address and the time of the request. Its handling of it is governed by its own privacy policy. Google Play may also check for app updates, under Google's privacy policy.
06 Permissions, and why
Every permission that unlocks personal data is optional. The App asks for one only when you set up a widget that needs it, and you can say no or revoke it at any time in Android Settings. The data each one unlocks is used only to draw the widget and is never sent anywhere.
| Permission | Why |
|---|---|
| Physical activity | Steps Walker reads the phone's step counter. |
| Usage access | Touch Grass reads how long you used your phone today and how many times you unlocked it. Granted in system Settings. |
| Notification access | Music Buddy reads the song title, artist and play state from the active media player. Notification content is never read or stored. Granted in system Settings. |
| Photos | Portrait widgets use Android's photo picker, so the App only sees the one photo you choose. No storage permission is requested. |
| Alarms & reminders | Lets ASCII clocks change exactly on the minute. |
| Run at startup | Restores your widgets after the phone restarts. |
| Internet and network state | Only for the weather request described above, and to retry it when you are back online. |
| Foreground service and wake lock | Used by Android's WorkManager to refresh the weather in the background. Nothing else runs in the background. |
07 No advertising or analytics
The App contains no advertising and no analytics, crash-reporting, or tracking SDKs. It does not access your advertising ID. The daily roll in Partners is free; there are no purchases.
09 Your rights
Depending on where you live — including under the GDPR, the UK GDPR, and India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 — you may have rights to access, correct, erase, or restrict processing of your personal data, and to complain to a data protection authority.
Because the App keeps everything on your device and we run no servers, we hold no personal data about you. You can delete all App data at any time by clearing the App's storage or uninstalling it. For any question, contact codeninjaapps07@gmail.com.
10 Data retention
Data stored on your device stays until you delete it, clear the App's data, or uninstall the App. We retain nothing on our own systems.
11 How your data is protected
App data lives in Android's private app storage, which other apps cannot read. Weather requests use encrypted HTTPS. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, but because we collect nothing, there is nothing about you on our side to protect.
12 Children's privacy
The App is a home-screen personalisation tool and is not directed to children under the age of 13, or the minimum age required in your country. It collects no personal data from anyone.
13 Third-party links
The App may link to our other apps on Google Play. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of third-party sites or services.
14 Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page, and the in-app privacy screen will be updated in the next release.
